15世紀に始まる。沖縄唯一の伝統的染物で、技法によって型付け（型染め）と糊引き（筒描き）とに分かれる。綿布、絹布、芭蕉布等に顔料及び植物染料を用いて手染めする色鮮やかな紅型と、琉球藍の浸染による藍型とがあり、それぞれ華麗な魅力を有している。
First practiced in the 15th century, bingata is the only traditional dyeing method of Okinawa. It is separated into two techniques of stencil dyeing and glue resist dyeing. Bingata is colorfully hand-dyed on cloth such as cotton, silk, or banana fiber using either pigments or plant dyes. There is also ēgata, a method of dip-dyeing using dye from the Strobilanthes cusia plant. Both bingata and ēgata have their own gorgeous charm.
