14世紀の末頃から始まる。木地はデイゴ、エゴノキ等で、上塗りは天然漆を用いた塗り立てで、特に朱の鮮やかさは他に例をみない。加飾は、沖縄独特の堆錦のほか、螺鈿、沈金、箔絵など多彩な技法がある。
First practiced near the end of the 14th century, a paint which uses natural lacquer is applied to a wooden base, usually of deigo (Indian coral tree) or egonoki (Japanese snowbell). The vivid vermillion color is especially unique. Various decorating techniques exist such as tsuikin, raden, chinkin, and haku'e.
